Why I Love This Image: The Reassuring Hand

Why I Love This Image

A Calm Hand During The Bridal Preparations

I love shooting bridal preparations on the morning of a wedding.  As a weding photojournalist  I love all the excitment, emotions, energy and nervous tension that is all mixed together during this part of the wedding day.  It’s such an integral part of the complete wedding story that I document.

Of course, with so much going on things can become quite frantic and chaotic, especially as the clock starts to tick down and that’s why I love this image…in amongst all that’s going on the bride’s younger sister and bridesmaid reaches out a hand to reassure her that everything’s going to be fine. Don’t worry, enjoy it, I’m here for you.

It also speaks of a deep love and affection between sisters on one of the biggest days in their lives.

And, of course, there’s the attention to detail up getting the wedding dress done up – never an easy thing, especially in the pressure and stress of the wedding morning.

You can’t fake a real and genuine moment like that.  Well, you can try, but it will never look the same or as authentic.  That’s why a wedding photojournalism is a perfect approach for documenting a wedding story – it’s real, natural and something you can look back at in years to come and enjoy the moment without thinking how it was set up by a photographer. That’s why I talk about ensuring the integrity of the moment in my photographic approach.

For me the black & white finishes it off, as b&w photography often does, and gives the moment a classic and timeless feel – something that the gorgeous surroundings of Ashridge House add to.

It really is an image I love.

My Why I Love This Image series hopefully gives you more of an insight of why I took particular images, their context and my thought processes. As a wedding photojournalist I strongly believe in providing an open, honest and transparent explanation of the photography I capture.
