Hi, I’m Darren, a documentary wedding photographer based near Bristol in the South West, documenting weddings across Somerset, Bath, London, throughout the UK and even beyond.
I photograph weddings differently.
Rather than turning your day into a photoshoot, I focus on quietly observing and naturally documenting what actually happens. The laughter that erupts unexpectedly. The nerves before the ceremony. The proud looks from parents. The chaos on the dance floor. The tiny moments most people miss completely.
My approach is rooted in documentary photography and shaped by years of shooting candid street photography. I’m drawn to real moments, raw emotion, humour, atmosphere and human connection. I don’t believe your wedding photographs should feel staged or forced. They should feel like memories. Your memories.
Where It All Started
So let’s start at the beginning, and that is my nan, Pearl. That’s her in the white dress with black spots. And that me rocking a tie and shorts at the front.
She was a very keen and enthusiastic amateur photographer and, when I was growing up, I was completely fascinated by her huge piles of photo albums from trips she’d taken around the world. I could spend hours sitting and looking through them.
The photographs felt like little windows into other places, other moments and other lives. Long before I ever thought about owning a proper camera myself, those albums showed me how powerful photographs could be; how they could freeze time, tell stories and bring memories flooding back years later.
Every now and then, if I was lucky, my nan would even let me play with her Kodak Instamatic camera… although usually without any film in it, just to be safe! But even then, I loved the feeling of holding a camera and looking through it at the world around me.
Photography Felt So Rock n Roll
In my teens, I became completely obsessed with music and convinced myself I was destined to be in a band. Unfortunately, I quickly discovered I couldn’t sing a note or play an instrument to save my life.
At the same time though, I’d fallen in love with the music photography of Anton Corbijn. His photographs felt raw, moody, cinematic and full of atmosphere. They captured personality rather than perfection, and they made musicians seem almost mythical.
I realised that if I couldn’t become a pop star, then the next best thing might be becoming a photographer.
Not long after that, my mum won an SLR camera. She had absolutely no interest in using it herself, so she handed it to me instead.
That changed everything.
From that moment on, photography slowly took over my life.
My Wedding Photography Journey
I’ve been photographing weddings since 2012 and have documented celebrations ranging from intimate informal weddings to large full-day events across the UK and further beyond. In fact, the furthest I’ve travelled (so far!) is to photograph a wedding in Tampere, Finland.
After stepping away from weddings for a period due to family illness and relocating from London to the South West (that’s me, K and our dog buddy on the beach), I’m recently relaunched my wedding photojournalism business to continue my love and passion for honest storytelling and documentary photography.
That time away reminded me why photographs matter so much.
They become history.
Not just how things looked but how they felt.
A Candid, Storytelling Approach
That was then, but lets get back to the now and photographing your wedding.
For most of the day, I work unobtrusively in the background, allowing events to unfold naturally while I document them honestly and creatively. I won’t constantly interrupt moments or ask people to repeat things for the camera. I definitely don’t bark instructions or order people about.
Instead, I look for authentic interactions and fleeting moments that tell the true story of your wedding day.
This wedding photojournalism approach allows you and your guests to relax, be yourselves and enjoy the day without feeling like you’re constantly being photographed.
The result is a collection of images that feel emotional, natural and timeless.
Influenced By Street Photography
Outside of weddings, I’m passionate about street photography, capturing life as it happens in public spaces. That experience has had a huge influence on how I photograph weddings.
Street photography teaches you to anticipate moments before they happen. To notice gestures, expressions, humour, light and human behaviour in split seconds. It’s about instinct, observation and storytelling.
I bring that same mindset into every wedding I photograph.
I’m always watching quietly for those unscripted moments that reveal personality and emotion, the in-between moments that often become the most meaningful photographs of all.
